The short answer
Check your address by postcode first. If full fibre is available it is the best choice for streaming, whether on the Openreach network through BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Vodafone and others, on an independent network such as Community Fibre or Hyperoptic, or from Virgin Media. Watch for the annual price rise written into the contract, and aim for a speed that holds up in the evening: 10 Mbps per Full HD screen and 25 Mbps for 4K.
Types of home broadband in the UK
| Type | Example providers | Good for streaming? | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full fibre on Openreach | BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Vodafone, Plusnet, EE | Best where available | Coverage is growing but doesn't reach every street yet |
| Independent full fibre | Community Fibre, Hyperoptic and providers on CityFibre | Excellent, often competitively priced | Only in certain cities and buildings |
| Virgin Media | Virgin Media | Yes, with high speeds | Compare the price after the introductory offer ends |
| Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) | Most providers | Yes, at 30 Mbps or more | Speed drops the further you are from the cabinet |
| 4G or 5G home broadband | Mobile networks | A good fallback when nothing else is available | Speed depends on location and how busy the cell is |
How do I see what's available at my address?
Enter your postcode on each provider's checker, or on a well-known comparison site, to see the speeds actually available at your address. If you live in a flat, ask the building management which networks are connected: some newer buildings in big cities are wired straight to independent full fibre networks.
Contracts and price rises
- Contract length: most contracts run 18 to 24 months; shorter or monthly contracts exist but usually cost more.
- Mid-contract price rises: since 17 January 2025 providers must state any annual rise upfront in pounds and pence instead of linking it to inflation. Read that clause before signing and work out the real cost over the whole contract.
- When the contract ends: providers must tell you before your contract ends and show their best deals. Staying on out of contract usually means a higher price, so compare and renew or switch.
- Switching: the new provider usually handles the switch, so you don't have to arrange it with your old provider yourself.
Documents you'll need
- A UK address where the router can be delivered.
- In most cases, a UK bank account for monthly Direct Debit.
- Most providers run a credit check. If you have just arrived and have no credit history yet, look at monthly contracts or providers that don't require one.
How much speed do you need for streaming?
Advertised speeds are averages or maximums; what matters is the real speed in the evening:
More detail in how much internet speed IPTV needs.
| Use | Recommended speed |
|---|---|
| One Full HD screen | A stable 10 Mbps |
| One 4K screen | A stable 25 Mbps |
| Family: two screens plus phones | 50 to 100 Mbps |
| Large home with several 4K screens | 300 Mbps or more |
Tips for buffer-free streaming
- Connect the TV or streaming device with an Ethernet cable if the router is close.
- In UK homes with thick walls or several floors, a mesh system or Wi-Fi extender improves the signal in far rooms.
- Test your speed between 19:00 and 22:00, when the network is under real load.
- If the stream buffers, follow these IPTV buffering fixes.
