Which Firestick to Buy in 2026? Some New Models Can't Run IPTV Apps
Amazon moved new Fire TV devices to Vega OS, which blocks apps from outside the Appstore. See which models still work with IPTV players and how to check your device before buying.

What changed with Firesticks?
Since October 2025 Amazon has been shipping new Fire TV Sticks with a new system called Vega OS instead of Android-based Fire OS. Vega OS doesn't allow apps from outside the Amazon Appstore, so Downloader and APK files don't work and you're limited to what the store offers.
Amazon has said all future Fire TV Sticks will run Vega. If you're buying a Firestick to run an IPTV player such as TiviMate or IPTV Smarters, choose the model carefully.

How to check your Firestick's system
- Before buying: avoid any model with Select in the name, and avoid HD models that list Wi-Fi 6, which are the 2nd-gen Vega models.
- After buying: open Settings → My Fire TV → About. If the version shows "OS" and starts with 1, it's Vega. If it starts with 5, 6, 7, 8 or 14, it's Fire OS and supports installing apps.
- If you bought a Vega device by mistake, check the store's return policy as soon as possible.
